From Australia to Punting in the NFL: The Journey of Matt Hayball
They say luck is when opportunity meets preparation. Here's a story for any punter wanting to get more lucky.
After leaning how to punt with Prokick Australia, Matt got a scholarship to play college football in America.
This is when we first met. He was going into his first year of college football and I was going into my last...
After that, I returned home, got my Masters in High Performance Sport, and started coaching.
Although being overseas, Matt would send me videos to be analyzed and came to Australia once a year to fine-tune his technique.
4 years later Matt's college football career came to an end.
But he wasn't done yet.
Although he wasn't touted as the best punter in college. He has dreams of being drafted and playing in the NFL.
But he knew he needed to maximise the power he had to stand out from everyone else.
So he reached out to me for some help...
Being a former punter (LSU & WVU), with degrees in Sports Science - I understood the struggles and guided Matt through a comprehensive program to prepare him for the next level.
Months of gym training and video analysis followed.
But Matt still didn't get drafted.
Instead, he got an opportunity as an 'un-drafted' free agent.
Even though majority of un-drafted players don't make it, Matt had put in the work and was ready to take on this challenge.
His preparation paid off.
He won the starting job as the punter for the New Orleans Saints.
And even ended the season with the most 'inside the 20' punts in the NFL...
Matt’s journey is a reminder that talent alone isn’t enough. Hard work, resilience, and the right support can turn dreams into reality—even when the odds are stacked against you.
